Our day was started by the wonderful image below from one of our readers. We hope all of you get a chuckle out of it as you start your weekend:
Cheers!
We are all probably familiar with occasionally hearing about prizes and rewards from contests in the food we eat. A classic example would be the free toy at the bottom of cereal boxes. But now, Sony is doing something with their PS Vita product… a chance to win one ahead of the official release by eating at Taco Bell.
According to this post on the Playstation Blog, news unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2012 reveal that SONY and Taco Bell are banding together to promote the soon-to-be-released PS Vita. How will they do this? By offering up the chance to win FREE PS VITAS in three ways.
This promotional starts on January 26th and ends on March 11th and the three ways you can win a PS Vita is called the “Unlock the Box, Battle, and Boast”. The one that caught our attention is the “Unlock” method:
UNLOCK THE BOX: Beginning January 26th, Taco Bell’s specially marked $5 Buck Box – which includes a Cheesy Gordita Crunch, Crunchy Taco, Burrito Supreme and medium fountain drink – will also provide a code that can be entered online for an instant chance to “unlock” and win a PS Vita.
What’s even more amazing is the blog post claims there will be a winner every 15 minutes. We’re not sure how reasonable that will happen, but by golly we guess we’re going to try Taco Bell one more time.

You knew this joke was coming.
For the curious, winners would receive “one PS Vita 3G/Wi-Fi system, one copy of the PS Vita exclusive Little Deviants, one 4GB PS Vita Memory Card and your choice of one of the following: ModNation Racers: Road Trip, MLB 12 The Show or LittleBigPlanet.”
With Christmas this coming weekend, we are pretty sure all of you are thoroughly bombarded with holiday “cheer”. So, before the last of the Diners.org staff leave for the weekend we just want to show you this movie trailer of a sushi chef in Japan.
The movie “Jiro Dreams of Sushi” comes out March 2012.
Until then, have a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and Happy Kwanza to all of you!
Editor’s Edit: Diners.org will resume on January 2nd, 2012. Enjoy the rest of 2011 and cheers for the brand new year of 2012!
No, it’s not an official endorsement. It is a parody commercial by SneakyZebra on youtube. It’s… well… the video is below:
Oddly enough, there is almost no explosions in this one…

There are few out there who do not know about the incredible lectures on TED Talks. The lectures varies from topic to topic, and food is a topic that is quite popular on TED Talks. This one especially caught my eye; It’s a talk about how we, as humans evolved to eat cooked food. This is not to say that it is the healthiest thing to cook EVERYTHING, but it certainly makes our food easier to digest. Cooking meat allows us to transform it to something easier to digest and healthier for us. It eliminates various parasites and allows us to extract more energy from it. The way we season food also is related to what we need and what our bodies crave. The reason why sugar and salt is used in much of our food is because our bodies use so much of it, that we are made to react to it with taste. Our bodies actually send signals from our digestive tracks to our brains to give us information. When that information is not received eating disorders may occur. It was a very interesting TED Talk and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

There you have it everyone! Congratulations to the top ten and we are sure they are worth the price that Zagat quoted (trust us, the Diners.org had the same reaction as you did).
You can see Zagat’s original listing page here.
If you have dined or would like the diners.org staff to try out one of these restaurants, feel free to message us on the contact form or by clicking here.
Listen up people! Throughout this week, various news media have been reporting recalls and warning against certain produce in circulation in the United States.
It first started with Cantaloupes from Jensen Farms in Colorado which lead to the death of 16 people and 72 still ill people due to the Listeria bacteria. Now, True Leaf farms in California are recalling their chopped romaine lettuce (with a used-by date of September 29) due to possible Listeria contamination. No one has been reported ill yet, but the CDC warns that Listeria has a long incubation period.
Below is a list of new media links as well as a video coverage from CNN:
Be safe everyone!
Almost two months ago, the Diners.org staff went on a journey to Lobstefest in Rockland, Maine. Along the way we dropped by Salem, Massachusetts for sightseeing, lunch, and the Helltini.
Previously we wrote a little bit about that experience in this article. Found at the Rockafellas restaurant, the menu description of the Helltini reads:
“Helltini – 20
Survive this to become a
Rockafellas Legend. First, sign a
waiver, then, good luck!
Vodka, Fire Water Schanpps, Ginger Ale,
Jagermeister, and our secret Hell Water.
Helltini T-Shirt to the ones
who survive to finish.”
Naturally we took on the challenge (there is a free t-shirt at stake!) and here’s the video! Dun dun dun!
Amazing….-ly spicy.
Pro-tip: sweet chocolate helps. The next time diners.org is in Salem, we’ll try the 2012 drink.
This might end up better than the 2012 movie.
Wheeeee! It seems like we’re starting a streak of writing about multiple topics in one posting!
So, we’re going to start with a rather innovative idea:
No, it’s not another Apple product although it has the boldness of one. Someone decided that a laptop should belong in the kitchen (despite the risk of food stains and crumbs from those of you who eat near your machines, YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE). Anyway, here it is:
Us here at Diners.org can’t really put our thoughts to words on this. It is a very innovative idea and is very cool in its own way. But we can see it go badly very quickly.
A kitchen is a messy place and we are assuming that the laptop uses a touchscreen due to the lack of a keyboard. That makes for one sticky consequence.
This idea is only a concept though, but it’s a neat one though up by a guy named Electrolux. You can see more images of the concept (including a cut-away view of the internals) and links by clicking here.
You read that correctly, there is an asparagus cake out there…
… and it looks exactly like it sounds. A bunch of tied up asparagus as though someone took a bunch from the vegetable aisle and slapped them onto your plate.
But behold!
Yes, it really is a cake with asparagus (can’t do one without the other in an asparagus cake). What it really is, is a Dark Devil’s Food Cake covered with asparagus chopped to resemble a tied bundle. This amazing combination was done by Rosie at sweetapolita.com. You can visit her post (and got “awww” at her pictures) by clicking here.
Warning for the bold: be prepared for snipping a lot of asparagus.
Today we found out that Starbucks may be giving out free iPhone Apps courtesy of Apple.
According to this article on CNET, this iPhone app promotion is based off the music “Pick of the Week” cards that Starbucks and Apple have been using.
Gizmodo’s article on this topic states that all you need to do is pick up the card near the cashier at Starbucks, punch in the code in the Apple Store, and presto! We’re not sure if it’s that easy, but since at least one member of the Diners.org staff has an iPhone we will find out soon enough!
On another note, we were forwarded this hilarious recipe comic about making Chili (Warning: Contains STRONG language and is long. Text version at the end.):

We applaud you, Tyler Capps
For those of you who can’t read the text, here it is:
